Calling All Coasties!
Martha Nest Shows the Way with Estate-Plan Gift to CGMA
![]() |
Martha Nest has always believed you should treat others as you would like to be treated, which is why her estate gift for CGMA makes so much sense.
Martha joined the Coast Guard Reserve after a co-worker dared her to give it a try in 1973, before women were allowed into the full Coast Guard two years later. She took the dare, did well on her written test, and cleared the minimum height requirement (barely). At the time, women were brand new to the Coast Guard, and Martha and her fellow female recruits had to march in repurposed World War II uniforms.
After a 20-year career in the full Coast Guard that included assistance with the Mariel Boatlift and reaching E7 rank, Martha retired from the USGC in 1993 but remained in the reserves until 2009. For her, CGMA is how “Coasties” support each other.
“I was taught that there was one simple rule in life: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” Martha says. “I hope that this gift will enable CGMA to continue its mission of Helping Our Own™.”
Martha invites everyone to join her in making a planned gift to CGMA.
“Calling all Coasties—remember when the car broke down—there was no extra money to fix it, and your wife (or you) were 9 months pregnant, and CGMA was there for you?! When you are doing your estate plan, remember those days and help ensure that CGMA is there for that young Coast Guard family.”
